Given the Coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis our world is facing, we, Sunrise Domestic & Sexual Violence Center, want to be on the forefront of ensuring physical safety for survivors of domestic & sexual violence and public health safety during this pandemic.
Please rest assured, our mission and our ability to carry out our mission hasn’t changed; we are continuing to combat domestic and sexual violence in our community. However, because of COVID-19, we must be exceptionally nimble and intentional in our review of our processes and ability to safely continue our services. As such, below please find some temporary modifications we are employing to keep survivors, staff and volunteers safe and healthy.
Lifesaving shelter housing and services will remain intact and available to survivors. We have made modifications (such as creation of isolation rooms and vigorous daily cleaning) to adhere to WHO, CDC, DOH & our monitoring bodies recommendations and are in compliance with Governor DeSantis’ mandate on social distancing provisions. If, for any reason, we cannot provide shelter to a survivor, we will assist the survivor in finding a safe alternative.
We anticipate calls to our 24/7/365 Hotline/Helpline may increase during this time as we know abusers/victimizers can feel especially embolden to abuse when their community is focused on a crisis, thus, we have increased support staff for our Hotline/Helpline to ensure every call is answered no matter the situation.
Domestic Violence Center Services
Our domestic violence outreach/advocacy services will remain intact and available to survivors. We have modified our services to temporarily provide all crisis counseling services via phone/video chat. In person meetings will be on a case by case basis and only for intakes. Our domestic violence support groups have been suspended at this time.
Sexual Violence Center Services
Our sexual violence outreach/advocacy services will remain intact and available to survivors. We have modified our services to temporarily provide all crisis counseling services via phone/video chat. In person meetings will be on a case by case basis and only for intakes. This does not change a survivor’s right to a confidential sexual assault advocate during a sexual assault forensic exam. We will offer that service via phone, and if and when necessary, in person. Our sexual violence support groups have been suspended at this time.
Legal/Injunction for Protection (IFP) Project Services
Our domestic and sexual violence legal and IFP services will remain intact and available to survivors. We have modified our services to temporarily provide all legal advice and legal advocacy services via phone/video chat and we are taking no in-person appointments until further notice. This does not change a survivor’s ability to petition the Court for an Injunction for Protection. Temporary Injunctions for Protection will be reviewed and ruled on in the same timely fashion as they always have been. However, hearings have been limited and modified per Supreme Court and Circuit Court Administrative Orders. Solutions Thrift Store
The Solutions Thrift Store will remain open in order to continue accepting and providing supplies for the shelter. We have made modifications to add additional cleaning and sanitizing throughout each day to adhere to WHO, CDC, & DOH recommendations and are following Governor DeSantis’ mandate on social distancing provisions. We have reduced the hours the store is open to the public, have encouraged volunteers who fall into the high-risk categories to stay home, have closed the dock to general donations, and have suspended pick-ups by the truck. The store will accept items intended for the shelter participants such as medical supplies, cleaning supplies, and food items.
Sunrise Domestic & Sexual Violence Center understands that now - more than ever - survivors need to know services are available to them. We are here to assure survivors that they can continue relying on us to provide these crucial services in our community.
