Sunrise Welcomes SAAM and Denim Day 2019
Sunrise Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center in Pasco County, has announced that they will be hosting two events during the month of April for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Local organizations can participate by helping to spread awareness in numerous ways from hosting an event, attending the luncheon or by participating in the National Denim Day campaign which exists as an act of solidarity for violence against women.
Denim Day was originally created after a ruling in the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. (http://denimdayinfo.org/about/) Sunriseās Denim Day campaign on April 24th is in support of the effort to wear jeans with a purpose, support survivors and to educate yourself and others about sexual assault.
If you or your organization would like to get involved, please contact Sunrise at 352-521-3358 or for more information.
