6th Annual Peace
This annual event brought together a myriad of community leaders, residents, elected
officials, law enforcement officers, and community members who truly wish to see an end
to the issues of domestic and sexual violence in our community.

This year's event focused on domestic and sexual violence victims and the families that
are left behind when a tragedy occurs.  The keynote speaker was Steve Roberts, the
brother of Vonnie Roberts who was murdered on May 2, 2009 by her husband Terry, who
then turned the gun on himself.  Vonnie was a loving mother, sister, friend and nurse.
She left behind a family who loved her deeply, co-workers who miss her and two sons
who are still bewildered by the events that unfolded that day.  Assisted by Sunrise's
Director of Outreach Services, Kelly Sinn, M.S.W., Steve shared some of Vonnie's
experiences at the hands of her abuser, her attempts to escape the situation and her
untimely death.

Penny Morrill, CEO of Sunrise dedicated the morning to the domestic violence and sexual
assault victims in our community.  She recognized the six victim who were killed this year
in Pasco County by someone who claimed to love them.  Thanks to the generosity of
Sunrise supporters who attended the breakfast, Sunrise exceeded the previous year total
givings by $2,000.

October 1, 2009
An Old Fashioned New England Clam Bake featuring fresh seafood shipped live directly
from New England was held at the American Legion Hall in Dade City, FL.  "Lobstertrician
Extraordinaire" Dave Morrill and his "crew" again wowed the guests at this popular and
fun fundraising event.

While DJ, Jeremy Rodriguez entertained the guests, Dave and his crew cooked up the
Clams, Shrimp, Potatoes, Corn on the Cob and, the guest of honor, the Maine Lobsters.
The meal was served to the guests by volunteers and Board members of Sunrise.

We also welcomed a Guest of Honor, Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence
(FCADV) Executive Director Tiffany Carr and her husband Patrick Howard.  CEO Penny
Morrill presented Ms. Carr with a gift to thank her for her unending dedication to domestic
violence survivors in our state; a painting created by a child residing in our shelter and
framed by "Domestic Violence Series" artist MeloD.

Later that evening Ms. Morrill was also recognized by the staff of Sunrise for her 23 years
of leading Sunrise of Pasco County.  When she began at Sunrise, services were provided
in a small office in the courthouse and volunteers would house battered women in their
homes for three days.  Without Ms. Morrill's commitment and dedication, women and
children escaping violence would not have a safe place to go.
